General information

Description of the project

Equipment of the memorial space by installing a sensory information terminal for street use with specialized software and individually developed content. The terminal will provide access to information about soldiers who are in captivity and are considered missing. The project provides for the integration of an accessibility module for people with disabilities, in particular wheelchair users, people with visual and hearing impairments.

The purpose of the project

Main Goal:

Creation of new facilities and services

Secondary Goal:

Increasing compliance with modern standards

Description of the purpose of the project and ways to achieve it

The main goal is the digital transformation of the culture of memory by creating open, interactive and barrier-free access to information about heroes or historical events. The project is aimed at: Dignified commemoration: Transition from static granite forms to dynamic content that allows telling a broader story (photos, videos, biographies). Social integration: Ensuring equal rights to receive information for all categories of citizens, including people with disabilities. Patriotic education: Creating a modern tool for youth to interact with history through a familiar digital interface. A comprehensive approach will be used to implement the project, combining technical, software and social tools: Engineering and technological: Installation of an anti-vandal street terminal with climate control (for operation at -25°C / +40°C) and a high-brightness touch screen. Software-inclusive: Accessibility module: An interface that moves the work area down for wheelchair users. For people with visual impairments: High contrast mode, font enlargement and text-to-speech function. For people with hearing impairments: Integration of an induction loop to transmit clear sound directly to a hearing aid. Content-analytical: Development of individual software with a database that has convenient search (by last name, date, department) and the ability to constantly update information. Communication: Setting up feedback so that relatives can submit requests for database additions directly via the terminal or QR codes. Today, there is a significant civilizational and technological gap in the field of memorialization. The current state is characterized by the use of static forms (granite slabs, steles), which have a number of critical shortcomings that can only be eliminated by the implementation of an interactive complex. Traditional memorials are limited by the physical surface area. They can only display the last name and dates of life. The context of the feat, photo archives, video materials or extensive biographies remain beyond the reach of a passerby. Target level: An interactive terminal allows you to store gigabytes of information about each person. This turns the memorial from a “list of names” into a “living history”, where each user can instantly receive a complete reference about the event or hero. Existing memorial signs often ignore the needs of people with disabilities. Information on high steles is inaccessible to people in wheelchairs, and the lack of audio support or tactile navigation makes the memorial “dumb” for people with visual and hearing impairments. Target level: The implementation of specialized software and equipment (induction loops, changing the interface height, TTS modules) ensures 100% inclusivity. This eliminates the gap in the constitutional right of citizens to equal access to public information. Any change in the database (correcting an error in the surname or adding a new name) in the traditional version requires the involvement of masons, dismantling structures and significant budget costs. This leads to the fact that the data remains irrelevant for years. Target level: The “Memory Book” system allows the administrator to update content in a matter of minutes via remote access. This guarantees the relevance of the memorial in real time without additional capital investments in the future. Modern youth perceives information mainly through digital channels. Static objects often do not evoke an emotional response in them due to the lack of interaction elements. Target level: The terminal creates a point of interaction (search, viewing media). This shortens the distance between the historical event and the citizen, transforming the visitor from a passive spectator into an active researcher of history.

Problems and solutions resulting from project implementation

PROBLEMS: 1. Traditional memorials do not answer the question "who was this person?". The problem lies in the lack of a living context (photos, videos, memories), which makes memory distant. 2. The lack of technical means (sound beacons, induction loops, adapted interfaces) actually closes access to cultural heritage for veterans with disabilities and civilians with visual or hearing impairments. 3. Traditional forms of commemoration are perceived by the younger generation as archaic, which reduces the effectiveness of national-patriotic education. 4. The problem of the inability to promptly add new names or correct errors without significant capital costs. RELEVANCE: 1. The number of heroes whose feat needs to be immortalized, unfortunately, is growing every day. Society needs a tool that can scale instantly. 2. Due to hostilities, the number of veterans and civilians in wheelchairs or with sensory impairments has increased significantly. The issue of accessibility has moved from the category of “desirable” to the category of “critically necessary”. 3. Ukraine is a leader in digital changes, and the field of memorialization cannot remain on the sidelines IMPACTS: 1. Veterans and people with disabilities will feel excluded from the socio-cultural life of the community. 2. The static nature of analog memorials leads to the loss of detailed information about events. 3. Without the involvement of modern technologies, people will simply pass by memorial areas without paying attention to them. POSITIVE CHANGES: 1. Every resident of the community, regardless of physical limitations, will have access to information. This will increase the level of social cohesion. 2. For the families of the deceased, the opportunity to see the full story of their hero (photo galleries, videos) is an important element of therapy and the feeling that the memory of their loved one is truly alive. 3. The transition from engraving to digital administration will significantly reduce the cost of maintaining the relevance of the memorial in the long term. 4. The possibility of integrating the local terminal into a single national digital memory network. 5. Demonstration that the community cares about its heroes, using the best world technologies.
