General information

Description of the project

Implementation of a set of measures to restore (improve) the hydromorphological characteristics of the water body (sediment management (extraction of bottom sediments), removal of aquatic vegetation) to ensure guaranteed water exchange with the Prydanuiskyi reservoirs Katlabukh and Kitay, as well as Staronekrasivskyi floodplains, Lung and Saf’yany lakes

The purpose of the project

Main goal:

Increasing the even distribution of resources

Secondary goal:

Contribution to climate or environmental goals, Improving the condition of infrastructure

Description of the purpose of the project and ways to achieve it

The state of the Lower Danube ecosystem and the economic state of the region are influenced by the state of the Kyslytsky branch of the Danube Delta. The Kyslytsky branch is used to fill with water (water exchange) the Katlabukh and Kitay reservoirs (which are sources of irrigation in the region), as well as the Staronekrasivskie floodplains, Lung and Safyany lakes. Climate change, a general decrease in water content and the redistribution of water flow between other branches of the delta, as well as the features of the Danube River sediment flow have led to silting of the Kyslytsky branch and the formation of sediment islands in its channel. Under the influence of these factors, which are interconnected, the Kyslytsky branch is undergoing intensive die-off. The degradation of the Lower Danube ecosystem, associated with the dying off of the Kyslytskyi branch, leads to irreversible changes in the biogeocenosis, an increase in the deficit of fresh water (the inability to use existing ways of redistributing water resources, including for the purposes of hydrotechnical land reclamation), and as a result, to environmental and economic losses. Taking into account the water management, environmental and social importance of the Kyslytskyi branch, it is necessary to implement a set of measures to restore the carrying capacity of its channel

Problems and solutions resulting from project implementation

The shallowing and silting of the Kyslytskyi branch has practically stopped the water exchange of the Danube with the Katlabukh and Kitay reservoirs (which are sources of irrigation in the region), as well as the Staronekrasiv floodplains, Lung and Safyany lakes. In order to improve the ecological state of the Lower Danube ecosystem, it is necessary to carry out work to clear the river branch of bottom sediments (including the elimination of alluvial islands) and excessive vegetation (with the obligatory preservation of the natural morphological characteristics of the channel)
