General Information

Program Description

Development of radioactive waste management infrastructure involves the creation and modernization of infrastructure for the safe storage, processing, transportation and disposal of radioactive waste in the exclusion zone. The main goal is to ensure environmental safety, reduce risks to public health and the environment, and bring the radioactive waste management system into line with international standards.

Strategic Case

Program Goal

Main Goal: Contribution to climate or environmental goals
Secondary Goal: Improvement of infrastructure condition
Problems: Over the years of operation of Ukrainian NPPs, a significant amount of waste has accumulated in on-site storage facilities, which requires further disposal. This is also a necessary requirement for obtaining a license from the National Energy and Nuclear Power Company of Ukraine to extend the operating life of individual NPP units, namely, sufficient free volume in storage facilities to accept radioactive waste, which will also be formed during scheduled preventive repairs at Ukrainian NPPs. It should be noted that significant volumes of radioactive waste of various categories have also accumulated at the Chernobyl NPP and the Radon Association, which require further disposal. The construction of storage facilities for radioactive waste disposal will partially solve the problem associated with: - high risk of environmental pollution - restrictions in the development of nuclear energy - Unsatisfactory condition of some radioactive waste management facilities. - High risk of accidents due to outdated equipment. - The need to provide alternative energy sources. -. Modernization of existing systems. - Lack of capacity for long-term storage of certain types of radioactive waste. - Insufficient funding and technological lag.
