General information

Description of the project

The project for the overhaul of the Skunda and Kugurlui canal dams is a strategically important infrastructure facility aimed at restoring the hydrotechnical stability and ecological balance in the system of Danube lakes. The main goal of the implementation is to carry out a complex of construction works, including raising the crest of the dams to the design levels, strengthening the slopes with reinforced concrete structures or stone overburden to protect against wave erosion, and restoring the operability of the regulating sluices. The project solves a number of critical problems, the most acute of which are the risk of breaching protective structures during floods on the Danube, which threatens to flood settlements and agricultural lands, as well as uncontrolled water exchange, which leads to siltation and deterioration of water quality in the lakes. The expected results of the project implementation are the complete stabilization of the hydrological regime of water bodies, minimizing damage from natural disasters, improving conditions for fish farming and irrigated agriculture, as well as preserving the unique ecosystems of the Danube region thanks to the possibility of operational management of water levels depending on the season and the ecological needs of the region.

Description of the purpose of the project and ways to achieve it

The aim of the public investment project is to fully restore the structural integrity and functional reliability of the Skunda and Kugurlui canal dams to create a sustainable flood protection system and ensure a controlled hydrological regime of the Danube lakes. The ultimate goal is to minimize the risks of man-made and natural emergencies, protect adjacent territories from flooding, and create conditions for the rational use of water resources in the region's agriculture and fisheries.
